Discovering Your Purpose: Embracing the Greatness Within You


Who Made You Feel Seen?

Can you think of someone who made you feel seen, special, or significant? Maybe they’re in your life now, or perhaps it was a teacher, coach, or mentor from years ago. Their presence, the way they looked at you, made you feel like you were destined for something great. They made you believe that you were born for a reason and had a wonderful destiny ahead.

For me, that person was P-Pop. He was my adoptive mother’s father—my grandfather—but when I was young, I couldn’t say “grandpa,” so I called him P-Pop, and the name stuck.

P-Pop was that person who brought joy into my world. Whether it was letting us ride in the back of his station wagon, giving us Hershey Kisses instead of vitamins, or playing along with our childhood shenanigans, he made us feel truly seen and valued.

Do you have someone like that? Picture their face for a moment.

Now, let me tell you something about them:


They were right about you.

They saw something in you. They believed in you. And their belief is a reminder of this powerful truth:

You were born to do something great with your life.


Defining Your Win

One of the most powerful moments in life is when you discover what “winning” means to you—your unique definition of success. Whether it’s impact, contribution, building generational wealth, creating unforgettable memories, or experiencing deep emotions, getting clear on what truly matters to you changes everything.


I was coaching a client recently, and she reached a moment of profound realization. She had been working in product engineering for a decade, but as she reflected, she felt restless.

“I don’t want to just produce outcomes and live drained,” she said. “I want to create.”

Her realization was liberating but terrifying.

“Change is terrifying.”

That’s one way to look at it. But what if stepping into the unknown is actually one of the most exhilarating, life-giving, courageous, and impactful things you could ever do?

“But I can’t see that… how do I start to believe it?”


You have to get free enough to create space for exploration, discovery, and transformation.

The reason you can’t see a life filled with creativity and thriving is because you haven’t been focusing your energy and resources there.


Becoming the Person Who Creates a New Future

To build something new, you must become someone new—someone who activates more of who they want to be rather than staying stuck in who they don’t want to be. It requires:

  • Training your mind to embrace a new identity.

  • Taking actions that align with your future self.

  • Evaluating what fits and what doesn’t.


What If You Fail?

What if failure was simply the first attempt at trying something new? What if failure was just part of the process of discovering what works?

In my undergraduate journalism studies, I interviewed many people reflecting on their lives. Their insights were like gold mines, especially when I asked about regrets and greatest accomplishments.


You know what most of them regretted?

  • Not taking time to discover who they are and what truly matters.

  • Working too much and neglecting deep, meaningful relationships.

  • Ignoring the dreams in their hearts.

  • Playing it safe and going through the motions without a sense of purpose.


Clarity Comes from Picturing It First

It’s scary because it’s unknown. It’s unknown because you haven’t practiced picturing it.

If you can see it, you can be it. And if you can be it, you can create it.


Ways to Get Clear on What You Desire

1. Journal Prompts

Set the mood—turn on some music, grab your favorite drink, and open your heart to some deep questions:

  • If I could get paid to create the most compelling life, what would I create?

  • If I could be excellent at anything, what would I want it to be?

  • If someone gave my eulogy, what would I want them to share?

2. Play Dates

Schedule time on your calendar to play. Prioritize learning more about yourself and what truly brings you joy.

3. Coaching

Invest in a coach who will challenge and support you. Coaching is my go-to strategy because I didn’t know how to truly care for myself until I learned. Coaches help you mine your soul, discover your truth, and embody your personal version of success. Without self-initiating this journey, you’ll always be at risk of living someone else’s version of success—and resenting them for it.
