Not enough people talk about how hard it is to leave survival mode—because stress has become their comfort zone.


Peace and stability don’t feel comfortable when you’ve spent your life navigating stress, uncertainty, and crisis after crisis. This is why so many people self-sabotage—because their subconscious mind equates chaos with safety.

Survival mode may feel normal, but it is physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausting.

  • It puts chronic stress on your immune system and nervous system.

  • It makes peace feel foreign and unsettling.

  • It creates an addiction to drama, stress, and dysfunction.


Have you ever felt bored, restless, or uncomfortable when things are finally stable? That’s because your body has been conditioned to crave stress hormones—like adrenaline and cortisol.

For many, survival mode isn’t just a habit—it’s an addiction.


How Survival Mode Becomes a Way of Life

Years ago, I worked with women recovering from trauma, addiction, and toxic relationships. Many of them had spent their entire lives in pain, dysfunction, anger, fear, and chronic anxiety.


They had no idea what peace looked like—because chaos was all they had ever known.

But here’s something even more surprising…

I also work with highly “successful” people—those who have:

  • Ivy League degrees

  • High-paying careers

  • Publicly respected lives

Yet behind closed doors, they are:

  • Trapped in highly dysfunctional relationships

  • Addicted to work, alcohol, or food

  • Living with crippling shame and self-sabotage


Survival mode doesn’t just show up in obvious dysfunction. It also hides behind achievement, people-pleasing, and overworking.

Success on the outside doesn’t mean peace on the inside.


Why It’s So Hard to Leave Survival Mode

Many of us are born into survival mode. It’s all we know.

  • We live from crisis to crisis.

  • We have relationships that keep us stuck in these cycles.

  • We believe there’s no other way to live.

But not enough people talk about how scary it is to leave it.

When I dedicated myself to breaking free from survival mode, I had to:

  • Change my relationships—some people weren’t meant to go with me.

  • Learn to set boundaries—and hold them.

  • Teach myself that chaos isn’t love and crisis bonding isn’t connection.

  • Move my body every day to release stored trauma.

  • Learn how to sit in stillness and peace without running back to dysfunction.

It takes time, self-compassion, and deep reliance on God.


Affirmations for Breaking Free From Survival Mode

  • I no longer need to rush to worst-case scenarios to feel safe.

  • I am open to peace and stability without creating unnecessary stress.

  • I trust myself to navigate life without chaos.

  • I am open to joy, ease, and rest.

  • I no longer define my worth by how much I endure.


How Storytelling Helps You Take Control of Your Mindset

Your brain is wired for survival—which means it automatically looks for threats, remembers pain, and holds onto past patterns.

But here’s the key: You are the storyteller of your life.

Instead of letting your brain repeat old survival narratives, start asking better questions:

  1. What do I really want?

  2. Who or what is keeping me from getting there?

  3. What will my life look like if I do (or do not) make a change?

Your brain needs clear direction. If you don’t command your thoughts, your past patterns will do it for you.


How to Work Through a Trigger in Five Steps

Triggers often send us back into survival mode—but they don’t have to.

Here’s how to interrupt the cycle and reclaim control:

  1. Notice the story your brain is telling you. Just observe. What assumptions is it making?

  2. Name it as a story. Say: “My brain is trying to protect me by creating this story.”

  3. Take deep belly breaths. This sends safety signals to your nervous system.

  4. Say “I don’t know.” This stops your brain from jumping to worst-case conclusions.

  5. Stay curious. Instead of reacting, ask better questions, communicate, and process.

When you practice this, you separate yourself from your triggers—which creates more peace, better relationships, and greater confidence.

Start asking yourself:

  • What has God given me control over right now?

  • What can I activate in my life today?

  • What is already working for me?

It’s time to leave survival mode and step into a new dimension of belief, peace, and purpose.

  • Be unapologetically yourself.

  • Stay focused on the vision God put in your heart.

  • Don’t let other people’s negativity pull you back into old patterns.

  • Set the tone with your energy.

  • Stay open, passionate, and curious.

Survival mode isn’t your destiny. Thriving is.
