The Power of Expectations: How to Align Your Mindset for Greater Breakthroughs




Did you know that you will get in life exactly what you expect?

Not what you want, but what you expect. This is one of the reasons why healing, maturing in faith, and investing in personal growth are so important. We don’t see and expect the same things when we’re broken as we do when we’re whole.


Our expectations set the limits for our lives—positively and negatively.


Your Expectations Shape Your Reality

For example, in relationships, people with low expectations tend to tolerate mistreatment, while those with higher expectations attract and maintain healthier connections. By setting high (but realistic) standards, you are far more likely to cultivate the relationships you desire than by passively accepting less.


In your career, when things haven’t evolved the way you envisioned, or you’ve faced setbacks, you may be hesitant to take another risk. Expecting more from yourself could mean facing another failure or disappointment. But is that the truth? Or just fear masquerading as logic?


Instead of expecting more from God or yourself, you may have unknowingly placed expectations on others, allowing them to dictate your moods, attitudes, and behaviors. This can lead to people-pleasing cycles that leave you drained and disappointed.


When Was the Last Time You Elevated Your Expectations?

If you can’t recall or haven’t done so recently, it’s time to expect more from yourself right now.


Why? Because your expectations shape your actions. If you have high expectations, you will rise to meet them. If you have low expectations, you will meet those instead.

Maybe you’ve lowered your standards to avoid disappointment. Perhaps you feel unworthy of big aspirations, so you shrink your dreams to fit what you believe you deserve. Or maybe you fear judgment from others for stepping into greater success.


Expectations Matter, but They Must Be in the Right Place

Our help and hope must be in God. When we’re out of alignment with Him, our expectations can be either too much or too little. Worse, we may expect from people what only God can provide. When we look to God, He will not disappoint.


The word expect means to look with an outstretched neck. Just like when you eagerly anticipate a package from Amazon Prime, every day, we should be looking expectantly for God’s promises to manifest in our lives.


Two Ways to Show God Your Positive Expectations

  1. Say “Thank You” in AdvanceThe highest expression of faith is thanking God before the breakthrough. Gratitude is the ultimate state of receiving because it demonstrates trust in His promises.

    “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes” (1 Samuel 12:16, NKJV).

  2. Sow Into What You ExpectA farmer never plants a seed without expecting a harvest. Likewise, we should never sow financially, spiritually, or emotionally without expecting a return.

    “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7, NIV).


Are You Sowing Into Your Future?

Your future is always in your seed. Whatever you’re believing for is tied to the seeds you plant today.


Have some of your dreams remained unfulfilled? Perhaps you haven’t sown a seed for them. Every seed produces after its own kind.

  • Are you praising God before you have a reason to?

  • Are you sowing where you want to go?


Make a List of Your Expectations

Begin it with:

  • God, thank You for…

  • God, thank You that…

  • I expect myself to…


Here’s an example:

I expect myself to:

  • Be kind and loving no matter the situation or how I have been treated. I love because I am well loved and I am loving, not because someone is being lovable.

  • Take care of the vessel I’ve been given. I treat my body with love and kindness by eating a healthy diet and exercising five times per week.

  • Do my work with passion, joy, enthusiasm, and energy. I do everything as unto the Lord.

  • Bring joy into every moment of every day. I choose to be of service in any way possible. It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Then, don’t let yourself down. Rise up to your expectations.
