Transforming Relationships: From Dealing to Empowering

Have you ever found yourself saying, “Help, I deal with people!”? If so, you’re not alone. Relationships—whether in leadership, business, friendships, or family—can be challenging. However, the key to truly leading and influencing others is to shift from simply “dealing” with people to empowering them.


As a leader, your role isn’t to fix people’s problems or control their decisions, but to inspire and equip them to become powerful in their own lives. How do you do this effectively? By recognizing what's not working and shifting your approach.


Why We Struggle to Solve Problems

Many times, we approach problems in ways that don’t actually help:

  • We react emotionally before praying and seeking wisdom.

  • We act without having the right information.

  • We focus on fixing rather than empowering.

  • We attempt to control things that aren’t ours to control.


A more effective approach is to identify whose problem we are working on. This shift in perspective creates clarity and freedom, preventing unnecessary exhaustion and frustration.


Who Owns the Problem?

When trying to help someone, first ask:

  • Whose problem are we working on?

  • Do they see the problem, or is it just me?

If they don’t recognize the issue, they won’t be open to solutions. Jesus illustrated this principle:

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” (Matthew 7:6)

People who don’t see a problem won’t value a solution.


Steps to Empower Others

1. Ask Great Questions

Instead of pointing out the problem, help them discover it through questions:

  • “What do you think the real issue is?”

  • “What challenges are you facing?”

  • “What do you believe needs to change?”

God used this approach with Job, asking questions that led him to self-reflection rather than simply giving answers (Job 38).


2. Help Them Reflect on Past Solutions

People have often tried to solve their problems before. Asking about their past efforts can guide them toward new insights:

  • “What have you tried before?”

  • “What worked? What didn’t?”

  • “What do you think would help now?”

This encourages ownership over their own growth.


3. Offer Education and Insight (With Permission)

Once someone is open to learning, ask permission before offering advice:

  • “I have some ideas that might help. Would you like to hear them?”

  • “Have you considered…?”

  • “Have you read/watched/listened to…?”

When people are ready for solutions, they will receive them.


4. Give Back the Responsibility

After walking through these steps, place the action plan back in their hands:

  • “Moving forward, what are you going to do?”

  • “What’s your next step?”

This reinforces empowerment, ensuring they take ownership of their decisions.


Empowerment vs. Control

Controlling people creates dependency and exhaustion. Empowering people creates strength and success.

  • A friend struggling in marriage learns from carrying the weight of their decisions.

  • An employee grows through taking responsibility for their actions.

  • A leader is most effective when guiding rather than micromanaging.

By allowing others to carry their own burdens, we help them develop wisdom and resilience.


Self-Check for Effective Leadership

Ask yourself:

  • How well do I listen?

  • Do I jump to fixing, or do I guide through questions?

  • Am I patient enough to let people process their own journey?


Final Thought: Lead with Strength and Compassion

Empowering others requires patience, wisdom, and humility. It’s about showing up with compassion, listening deeply, and guiding people to their own solutions.

“The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.” (Proverbs 16:21)
